Cluj-Napoca is the largest city in Transylvania and the region's cultural and academic centre. The old town around Unirii Square holds the Gothic St Michael's Church, with a large student population giving the city a young and lively character.
St Michael's Church and the Matthias Corvinus house, birthplace of the Hungarian king, anchor the old town. The Central Park and the Hoia forest on the edge of the city are the green spaces, the Turda salt mine an hour away has been turned into a startling subterranean amusement park, and the city hosts one of Europe's largest electronic music festivals.
The centre is compact and walkable and trams and buses cover the city. The airport is close, and roads lead out into the Apuseni mountains and toward the painted monasteries further east.
Late spring through early autumn is much the most pleasant, and the festival season falls in summer. Winters are cold with snow.
