Iaşi lies in the northeast of Romania near the Moldovan border, built across several hills in the historic region of Moldavia. The centre runs along a main boulevard between the enormous Palace of Culture and the university quarter, and the city has one of the country's largest student populations.
The Palace of Culture at the foot of the main boulevard is the landmark building and houses several museums. The Trei Ierarhi church with its intricately carved stone facade is unlike anything else in the country, and the surrounding hills hold a number of important monasteries.
Trams and buses cover the city, and the central boulevard and its surroundings are walkable. The hills mean some routes are steeper than a map suggests.
Late spring and early autumn are the most comfortable, and the surrounding wine country is at its best in autumn. Summers are hot and winters are cold with reliable snow.
