Valparaíso is Chile's historic port, a city of steep hills rising around a wide bay west of Santiago. Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción are the most popular areas to stay, with guesthouses, cafés and views, while the flat port district below is busier and grittier.
The historic quarter is a World Heritage site, known for its colourful houses, street murals and old funicular elevators climbing the hills. La Sebastiana, the poet Pablo Neruda's hilltop house, is a museum, and the New Year's Eve fireworks over the bay are famous.
The hills are best explored on foot, with funiculars and shared taxis easing the climbs. A commuter train runs along the coast to neighbouring Viña del Mar, and frequent buses reach Santiago in under two hours.
As a Southern Hemisphere city, Valparaíso is at its best from December to March, with warm, dry weather, though morning fog is common. Winter from June to August is cool and brings most of the year's rain.
