Antofagasta is a port city pressed between the Pacific and the coastal range of the Atacama Desert, so it runs as a long north-south strip rather than spreading inland. The centre near the old port and the main square holds most services, with newer residential districts extending south along the shore.
The coastline is the city's defining feature, with the stone arch of La Portada north of the city the best-known landmark and best visited in daylight. The desert interior beyond the coastal range is famous for exceptionally clear night skies, which is why so many observatories are sited in this region.
The city is long and narrow, so buses and shared taxis running the length of the coast road are the practical way to travel. The central area around the port and the square is walkable, and the surrounding desert makes a vehicle necessary for anything further out.
The climate is exceptionally dry all year with very little rain, and temperatures stay mild rather than extreme thanks to the cold coastal current. Coastal cloud can sit over the city in the cooler months, so the clearest conditions are generally found inland.
