San-Pédro is a purpose-built deep-water port on Ivory Coast's southwestern coast, developed to serve the cocoa and timber trade of the interior. The town is functional and spread out, with the port dominating one side and residential and commercial districts behind.
The working port is the reason the town exists and shapes its character, handling a large share of the world's cocoa exports. The beaches west of the town and the forest country inland are the regional attractions, and the coast here is markedly less developed than around Abidjan.
Shared taxis are the standard local transport and the town is too spread out to walk comfortably. Road connections run east along the coast toward Abidjan and north into the forest belt, and journeys are long.
The climate is equatorial and humid, with a long rainy season through the middle of the year. The drier months around the turn of the year are more comfortable for the coast and easier for road travel.
