Safi is Morocco's principal pottery centre, and the hillside potters' quarter with its kilns and workshops is the town's distinctive attraction. The Portuguese fortress on the harbour and the medina are the historic core, and the town is one of the world's larger sardine ports.
The medina and potters' quarter are walkable, though the hill is steep. Grands taxis and buses cover the town and connect along the coast to Essaouira and El Jadida.
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant. The Atlantic keeps summers cooler than inland Morocco, and winters are mild and wetter.
Morocco uses the MAD, calling code +212.
Morocco uses the dirham, and Arabic is official with Berber recognised and French widely used. Bargaining is expected in the pottery souks, and cash is needed for most transactions.
