Staying within or near Fes el Bali, the old walled medina, puts historic sights, markets, and workshops within walking distance, though the narrow, maze-like streets take some getting used to. The newer part of the city offers a more modern, spread-out alternative a short drive away.
The old medina's tanneries, markets, and historic madrasas are best explored in the cooler morning hours, before the day's heat and crowds build. A guide is genuinely useful here given how easy it is to lose one's bearings in the winding lanes.
The old medina is entirely pedestrian, with goods moved by handcart and pack animal rather than vehicles, so walking is the only way to explore it. Taxis cover the newer parts of the city and trips between the old and new districts.
Spring and autumn bring mild, comfortable temperatures well suited to long days spent walking the medina, while summer heat and winter's occasional cold and rain make those seasons less ideal for extended outdoor exploring.
