Rufisque lies on the Atlantic coast east of Dakar and is one of Senegal's oldest colonial towns, now absorbed into the capital's urban region. The old centre retains decaying colonial buildings from its period as a major groundnut export port.
The colonial architecture of the old town is the local interest, though much of it is in poor condition. Dakar's Gorée Island, a World Heritage site connected to the Atlantic slave trade, and the African Renaissance Monument are the region's main sights, and the Lac Rose salt lake is nearby.
Shared minibuses and taxis cover the town, and a regional express rail line serves the corridor into Dakar. Traffic on the peninsula is heavy.
The cooler dry season from around November to May is much the most comfortable, moderated by the Atlantic. The short rainy season falls mid-year.
