Guédiawaye is a densely populated suburb on the Atlantic coast northeast of Dakar, part of the Senegalese capital's continuous urban area. It grew rapidly from resettlement of families moved out of central Dakar, and is largely residential.
There are no formal visitor attractions in the suburb. Dakar's Gorée Island, a World Heritage site connected to the Atlantic slave trade, and the African Renaissance Monument are the region's main sights, and the Lac Rose salt lake lies further along the coast.
Shared minibuses and taxis are the standard transport, and a regional express rail line now serves the corridor into Dakar. Traffic on the peninsula is consistently heavy.
The cooler dry season from around November to May is much the most comfortable and is moderated by the Atlantic. The short rainy season falls in the middle of the year.
