Qarshi is the capital of Kashkadarya region in southern Uzbekistan, an ancient oasis city on the Kashkadarya river once known as Nasaf. Today it is an administrative and industrial centre tied to the region's gas fields, with a modest historic core.
A handful of old domed mosques and madrasas survive in the centre, along with an old brick bridge over the Kashkadarya. Shahrisabz, the birthplace of Amir Timur, with the colossal ruined gateway of his Ak-Saray palace, lies a couple of hours to the northeast across the mountains.
Taxis and minibuses cover the city. Trains connect Qarshi with Tashkent and other cities, and shared taxis are the usual way to reach Shahrisabz.
Spring and autumn are the best times, with warm, pleasant days. Summers in the southern desert are extremely hot, and winters are cool.
