Pātan, also called Lalitpur, lies across the Bagmati from Kathmandu and forms part of the same valley conurbation. It is the oldest of the valley's three royal cities and retains a denser concentration of surviving Newar architecture than either of the others.
Patan Durbar Square is a World Heritage site and, for many visitors, the finest of the valley's three squares, with its palace complex and the stone Krishna Mandir. The Patan Museum inside the palace is outstanding, the Golden Temple nearby is a working Buddhist monastery, and the city remains a centre of metalworking and thangka painting.
The old city is compact and walkable, and its lanes are best explored on foot. Taxis and buses connect across the river to Kathmandu in a short but often slow journey.
Autumn and spring are much the best, with clear mountain views and comfortable temperatures. The monsoon through the middle of the year brings heavy rain, and winters are cool with hazy air.
