This Bharatpur is in the Chitwan district of southern Nepal, not the city of the same name in India, and sits on the Terai plain beside the Narayani River. It is a fast-growing commercial and medical centre and functions as the gateway to Chitwan National Park.
Chitwan National Park, a World Heritage site holding rhinoceros, tigers and gharial crocodiles, lies just south and is the reason nearly all visitors come. The park is best entered from Sauraha nearby, and river trips on the Narayani are the other main activity.
The town is spread out and taxis or rented motorbikes are the practical way around. It sits on the main east-west highway, and the airport gives quick connections to Kathmandu and Pokhara, avoiding a long mountain drive.
The cool, dry months from late autumn to early spring are much the best for wildlife viewing, with clearer air and more comfortable temperatures. The monsoon through the middle of the year brings heavy rain and restricts access to parts of the park.
