Machala calls itself the banana capital of the world, and the plantations around it and the port at Puerto Bolívar are its economy and character. The beaches at Jambelí on an island offshore are reached by boat, and the highland town of Zaruma with its wooden architecture and gold-mining history is inland.
Taxis and buses cover the city, and boats leave from the port for the island beaches. Roads run north toward Guayaquil and east up into the highlands.
The coast has a hot wet season in the first months of the year and a cooler, drier season after. The wet season is sunnier between showers.
