The city is administrative and commercial rather than a destination. Manabí is regarded as the heartland of Ecuadorian coastal cooking, and the province's beaches at Manta and the quieter coast further north are the regional draw, along with Machalilla national park.
Taxis and buses cover the city and the centre is walkable. Roads run west to the coast in under an hour and south toward Guayaquil.
The coast has a hot wet season in the first months of the year and a cooler, drier and often overcast season after. The wet season is sunnier between showers and is the better beach period.
