The river is the town's defining feature and the reason for its position, historically a transfer point between rail and river transport heading south. The town is a working transport and trading centre rather than a destination.
Rickshaws and shared vehicles cover the town, and the riverside is walkable. Road and rail connections run north to Khartoum and south toward the border.
The cooler months around the turn of the year are much the most comfortable. Summers are extremely hot, and the short rainy season can make roads difficult.
