Fergana lies in the Fergana valley in eastern Uzbekistan, a fertile basin ringed by mountains and shared between three countries. The city itself is a Russian colonial foundation with tree-lined avenues, quite unlike the ancient towns around it.
The city is a base rather than the attraction. Margilan nearby is the centre of Uzbek silk production, where the Yodgorlik factory still makes ikat by hand, Rishtan is the country's ceramic centre, and Kokand holds the palace of the last khan of the valley.
Shared taxis are the standard way of moving between the valley towns and are quick and cheap. The city itself is walkable, and the mountain road to Tashkent is spectacular.
Spring and autumn are much the most comfortable. Summers in the valley are very hot, and winters are cold, with the mountain pass to Tashkent occasionally affected by snow.
