El Obeid is the principal city of the Kordofan region in central Sudan, sitting on the dry savanna well inland from the Nile. The centre is built around its market and the main mosque and cathedral, and the town spreads low and wide across flat ground.
The market is the heart of the town and the regional trade centre, busiest in the morning. The area is historically the centre of the gum arabic trade, gathered from acacia trees across the surrounding savanna, and that trade still shapes the town's commerce.
The centre is walkable, with rickshaws and shared vehicles for longer distances. Road and rail connections run toward Khartoum and westward into Darfur, and conditions vary considerably with the season.
The climate is hot and dry for most of the year, with a short rainy season in the summer that briefly greens the savanna. The cooler months around the turn of the year are far more comfortable.
