The Kalyan Minaret, said to have been spared by Genghis Khan, towers over its mosque and a working madrasa. The Ark fortress, the tiny tenth-century Samanid Mausoleum, the four-towered Chor Minor and the pool-side Lyab-i Hauz ensemble are all highlights, linked by covered trading domes.
The old town is best explored on foot, and taxis cover longer distances. High-speed trains connect Bukhara with Samarkand and Tashkent.
