Blida lies south of Algiers at the foot of the Atlas mountains, on a fertile plain known as the Mitidja. The town is set among orange groves and is known as the city of roses, with a compact centre around its main square.
The orange and rose growing that surrounds the town is its defining character, particularly in blossom season. Chréa National Park in the mountains directly above the city offers cedar forest, walking and a winter ski area, and is reached by a winding mountain road.
The centre is walkable and taxis cover the town, with trains connecting to Algiers in around an hour. The mountain road up to Chréa is narrow and slow.
Spring is the most attractive season, with blossom on the plain and green in the mountains. Summers are hot on the plain though cooler in the hills, and winters bring snow to Chréa.
