Annaba is a Mediterranean port in northeastern Algeria, close to the Tunisian border, set on a bay with hills behind. The centre has a French colonial character around its main boulevard, and the beaches run north and south of the city.
Hippo Regius, the Roman city where Saint Augustine served as bishop and died, lies on the city's edge with substantial excavated remains. The basilica built in his memory stands on the hill above the ruins and is the city's landmark, and the Corniche and its beaches are the local recreation.
The centre and boulevard are walkable, and taxis cover the city. The coastal road runs east toward the Tunisian border and the Edough massif rises behind the city.
