Al Qadarif lies in eastern Sudan on the road toward the Ethiopian border, serving one of the country's most productive agricultural regions. The town is built around its market, which handles the grain trade from the surrounding plains.
The market is the town's defining feature and the centre of the regional sorghum and sesame trade, busiest in the morning. The town is a staging point rather than a destination, and the road east climbs toward the Ethiopian highlands.
The centre is compact and walkable, with rickshaws and shared vehicles for longer distances. Road connections run west to Khartoum and east toward the border.
The climate is hot with a summer rainy season that greens the surrounding plains and can make roads difficult. The cooler, drier months around the turn of the year are much easier for travel.
