Al Hoceïma sits on the Mediterranean coast of northern Morocco, built on cliffs above a series of small bays in the Rif mountains. The centre is compact, arranged above the main bay, with the port below and residential districts climbing the slopes behind.
The coves and beaches below the town are the principal attraction and are at their best in the calm of early morning. The surrounding national park protects a stretch of rugged coastline and mountain forest, and the mountain roads inland give dramatic views over the sea.
The town centre is small enough to walk, though it is built on a slope and involves climbs. Taxis cover the bays and the surrounding area, and buses connect along the coast and inland across the Rif.
The Mediterranean climate gives hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. Late spring and early autumn are the most comfortable, avoiding both the peak summer crowds and the winter rain.
