Zumpango lies in the north of the State of Mexico, beyond the northern edge of the Mexico City metropolitan area. Traditionally agricultural and centred on a large lagoon, it has grown rapidly as the site of the capital's newer international airport at Santa Lucía.
The Zumpango lagoon, a remnant of the lake system that once filled the Valley of Mexico, attracts birdlife and weekend visitors. Excavations during the airport's construction uncovered hundreds of mammoth remains, now displayed in a palaeontological museum at the site.
Buses connect Zumpango with neighbouring towns and Mexico City, and a car or ride-hailing is practical locally. Travel into the capital can take a long time depending on traffic.
The dry season from November to April offers sunny days and cool nights at this high altitude. The rainy season from June to September brings afternoon thunderstorms, but temperatures remain mild.
