Zinder is the second city of Niger, in the south of the country near the Nigerian border. The old quarter of Birni holds the sultan's palace and a warren of traditional Hausa mud-brick architecture, quite distinct from the modern town beside it.
The sultan's palace and the Birni quarter with its banco architecture and painted facades are the city's distinction, and the great mosque stands alongside. The city was the colonial capital before Niamey, and the granite outcrops around it are a striking feature of the landscape.
Shared taxis and motorcycle taxis cover the city, and the old quarter is walkable. Roads run west toward Niamey and south into Nigeria, and travel in Niger requires current local advice.
The cooler months around the turn of the year are much the most comfortable. The hot season before the summer rains is extreme, and the harmattan brings dust.
