Yogyakarta sits on the plain below the Merapi volcano in central Java and remains a sultanate with its own special status. The city is arranged around the kraton palace complex, with the Malioboro street corridor running north from it holding most of the shops and visitor accommodation.
The Buddhist temple complex at Borobudur and the Hindu temples at Prambanan are both World Heritage sites within easy reach, and Borobudur is at its most striking at sunrise. The kraton and the water castle in the city itself, and the batik and silver workshops in the surrounding districts, fill the days between.
The city centre around Malioboro is walkable, and horse carts and cycle rickshaws work the tourist routes. Ride-hailing is cheap and ubiquitous, and reaching the temples is easiest by arranged car or organised trip.
The dry season through the middle of the year is much the best for the temples and for any volcano trekking. The wet season brings heavy afternoon rain and frequent cloud over Merapi.
