Yenagoa is the capital of Bayelsa State in the Niger Delta, built on low ground threaded with creeks and mangrove. It is a relatively young state capital, with government buildings and newer development laid out along the main roads.
The city is administrative rather than a destination, and its character comes from the surrounding delta waterways. Boat trips through the creeks and mangrove are the distinctive regional experience, and the delta's fishing communities are reached mainly by water.
