Yanji is the capital of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in eastern Jilin, close to the North Korean border. Signage throughout the city is in both Chinese and Korean, and the ethnic Korean character of the place is immediately visible.
The city's Korean-Chinese food culture is the main everyday draw, with cold noodles and barbecue that differ from both Chinese and Korean equivalents. Changbaishan, the volcano with a crater lake on the North Korean border, is the region's outstanding natural site, and viewpoints near the border town of Tumen look across the river into North Korea.
Buses and taxis cover the city and the centre is walkable. Reaching Changbaishan requires a long drive or an organised trip, and high-speed rail connects toward Changchun.
Summer and early autumn are much the best for the mountain, which is often closed or inaccessible in winter. Winters here are long and severely cold.
