Yangshuo lies south of Guilin in Guangxi, on the Li river among some of the most photographed karst scenery in the world. The town is small, built around West Street, and is entirely oriented toward visitors.
The Li river between Guilin and Yangshuo is the classic Chinese landscape, best seen from a bamboo raft or on the cruise downstream, and the view appears on the twenty-yuan note. Cycling through the countryside past the Yulong river and its old bridges is the other essential, and the karst here is among the best rock climbing in Asia.
The town is walkable and bicycles or electric scooters are the standard way to explore the countryside. High-speed rail reaches a station outside the town, and boats work the rivers.
Spring and autumn are much the most comfortable and the clearest. Summers are hot and wet though the rivers are fuller, and winters are cool and misty, which has its own atmosphere.

China uses the renminbi, quoted in yuan, and Mandarin is standard with some English in the tourist town. Mobile payment is near-universal, so arranging a working method matters.
