Xuanhua is a district of Zhangjiakou in northwestern Hebei, on the plateau northwest of Beijing. It retains a substantial section of its Ming city wall and gate towers, which distinguishes it from most towns of its size in the region.
The Qingyuan gate tower and the surviving stretches of city wall are the historic sights and are the reason the town is worth a stop. The area is known for its grapes, grown on trellises in a traditional local system, and the mountains toward the ski areas developed for the Winter Olympics lie north.
Buses and taxis cover the district, and the old centre around the gate towers is walkable. High-speed rail from Beijing reaches Zhangjiakou in under an hour, which has made the area far more accessible.
