Xinyuan is a county in the Ili valley of northwestern Xinjiang, set among the Tianshan mountains near the Kazakhstan border. The county town is small and practical, and the reason to come is the high grassland and mountain scenery around it.
The Nalati grassland, with rolling alpine meadows, forests of spruce and summer camps of Kazakh herders, is one of the most celebrated landscapes in Xinjiang. Valleys of wild apricot trees blossom in spring, and horse riding and yurt stays are common experiences.
Buses and shared taxis connect the county town with Yining, the prefecture centre, and a regional airport serves the grassland area. Distances are long, security checkpoints are frequent, and passports should be carried at all times.
