Xilinhot sits on the Xilingol grassland in central Inner Mongolia, a low modern town surrounded by open steppe in every direction. It is the administrative centre for a vast pastoral region, and the grassland rather than the town is the reason to come.
The Xilingol grassland is among the best-preserved steppe landscapes in China and is the main attraction, at its greenest in the short summer. Beizi Miao, a Tibetan-style Buddhist monastery on the edge of town, is the principal built site, and Mongolian horsemanship and wrestling festivals are held on the grassland in summer.
Buses and taxis cover the town, which is compact. Reaching the grassland camps and the monastery requires a hired car or an organised trip, and distances on the steppe are very large.
Summer is short and is much the best time, when the grass is green and the festivals take place. Winters here are long and severely cold with strong winds across open ground.
