The Xilingol grassland surrounding the town is the attraction, among the best-preserved steppe in China and at its greenest in the short summer. The Beizi Miao monastery on the town's edge is the main built site, and summer grassland festivals feature Mongolian horsemanship and wrestling.
The town is compact and covered by buses and taxis. Reaching the grassland requires a hired car or organised trip, and distances across the steppe are considerable.
Summer is brief and much the best season, when the grassland is green. Winters are long, severely cold and windy.
