Xico is a densely built area within Valle de Chalco on the southeastern edge of the Mexico City metropolitan area, on the flat bed of a drained former lake. It is residential and working-class, developed rapidly and informally, and is not a visitor destination.
There are no formal attractions in the area, which is part of the outer fabric of the metropolitan area. The volcanoes on the eastern horizon are visible on clear days, and central Mexico City with its museums and historic centre lies to the northwest.
Buses and shared vans connect toward the eastern end of the metro network, and journeys into the centre are long. The ground is flat, but the scale of the area makes walking between districts impractical.
The high-altitude climate is mild year-round, with summer rains bringing heavy afternoon storms and occasional flooding on this low-lying former lakebed. The drier winter months are sunnier with cold nights.
