Willemstad's colorful historic districts on either side of the harbor entrance are compact and easily explored on foot, with a footbridge and ferry connecting them. Areas further from the center are quieter and better suited to visitors with a rental car.
The harbor-front architecture is especially striking in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon, and photographs well without the midday sun's harsh glare. Nearby beaches and snorkeling spots make a relaxed addition to a day mostly spent downtown.
The historic center is very walkable, while buses and taxis serve the rest of the island for beach trips and other destinations. Many visitors also rent a car for easier access to areas outside the capital.
Curaçao lies outside the main Caribbean hurricane belt and enjoys a dry, sunny climate for much of the year, with the driest, most comfortable stretch generally falling between January and September. Rainfall picks up slightly toward the end of the year.
