Vologda stands on the river of the same name in northern Russia, and is unusual for the number of nineteenth-century wooden houses that survive in its central streets. The kremlin and cathedral sit on the riverbank at the heart of the old town.
Saint Sophia Cathedral inside the kremlin holds a large sixteenth-century fresco cycle and is the city's principal monument. Vologda is famous throughout Russia for its lace, with a dedicated museum, and for its butter, and the wooden architecture of the older streets is the other reason to walk here.
The historic centre is compact and walkable, and buses cover the wider city. Trains connect to Moscow overnight and to Arkhangelsk in the north.
Summer is short, mild and much the best, with long northern daylight. Winters are long and cold with heavy snow, which suits the wooden streetscapes.
