Vladimir stands on a bluff above the Klyazma river east of Moscow and is one of the principal cities of the Golden Ring. The historic centre runs along a single main street between the medieval gate and the cathedrals, and is compact enough to walk.
The Assumption Cathedral holds frescoes by Andrei Rublev and, with the Cathedral of Saint Demetrius and the Golden Gate, forms a World Heritage group of white-stone monuments. The church of the Intercession on the Nerl, standing alone in a meadow outside the city, is among the most admired buildings in Russia.
The historic centre is walkable along its main street, and buses cover the wider city. Fast trains reach Moscow in under two hours, and Suzdal is a short bus ride away.
Late spring through early autumn is the most pleasant, and the meadow church is at its best when the water is high in spring. Winters are cold and snowy, which suits the architecture.
