Vigo lies on a deep ría on the Atlantic coast of Galicia in northwestern Spain, and is one of Europe's largest fishing ports. The old town climbs steeply from the harbour, with the Casco Vello and its oyster street at its heart.
The Cíes Islands at the mouth of the ría are a national park with a beach often ranked among the finest in the world, reached by ferry with visitor numbers capped. Rúa das Ostras in the old town sells oysters shucked on the street, the Castro hill fort gives views over the ría, and Santiago de Compostela is an hour north.
The old town and harbour are walkable though steep, and buses cover the hills. Ferries reach the islands in summer, and high-speed trains connect to Santiago and Madrid.
Late spring through early autumn is much the best, and the island ferries run in the warmer months. Galicia is genuinely wet, with rain possible in any month.
