The city is a gateway rather than a destination. The northern Pantanal, the world's largest tropical wetland and the best place anywhere to see jaguars in the wild, is reached from here via the Transpantaneira road, and the Chapada dos Guimarães with its red cliffs and waterfalls lies to the northeast.
The airport is in the city and buses connect across to Cuiabá. Reaching the Pantanal requires a vehicle and generally an organised lodge stay along the Transpantaneira.
The dry season from around May to October is much the best for the Pantanal, when animals concentrate at shrinking water and the roads are passable. The wet season floods much of the wetland.

Brazil uses the real, and Portuguese is the language with little English outside the lodges. The climate is hot year-round, and cards and instant transfers are widely accepted.
