Valladolid sits on the Castilian plateau in northern Spain, on the Pisuerga. It was briefly the capital of Spain, and the centre retains that period's civic buildings around the Plaza Mayor, one of the earliest arcaded main squares in the country.
The National Sculpture Museum holds an exceptional collection of polychrome wooden sculpture, much of it carried in the city's Holy Week processions, which are among the most solemn in Spain. Cervantes lived here and his house is a museum, the unfinished cathedral is by Herrera, and the Ribera del Duero wine region lies immediately south.
The centre is compact and walkable. High-speed trains reach Madrid in under an hour, which makes the city an easy detour, and buses cover the wider area.
Spring and autumn are much the most comfortable. The plateau is extreme in both directions, with hot dry summers and genuinely cold winters, and Holy Week in spring is the city's major event.
