Utrecht sits at the centre of the Netherlands, with a compact medieval core ringed by canals whose wharves sit a level below the street, lined with cafés at water level. Most visitors stay within or just outside the canal ring, and the university gives the city a young character.
The Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the country, dominates the centre and stands separated from its church by a square where the nave once stood. The split-level canal wharves are unique to the city and best appreciated from the water, and the Rietveld Schröder House on the edge of the centre is a landmark of modern architecture.
The centre is small enough to walk, and Utrecht is exceptionally well set up for cycling with the largest bicycle parking facility in the world at the station. Its position at the hub of the Dutch rail network makes almost anywhere in the country a short trip.
Late spring through early autumn is the most pleasant, with long daylight and the canal terraces in use. Winters are grey, damp and windy rather than severely cold, and rain is possible in any month.
