The city is a base for the Kazakh Altai, whose forests, lakes and mountains are among the most scenic in the country and quite unlike the steppe elsewhere. Lake Markakol and the mountain roads toward the Russian and Chinese borders are the regional draws, and the ethnographic museum covers the area's mixed Kazakh and Russian heritage.
Buses and taxis cover the city and the riverside centre is walkable. Reaching the Altai requires a hired car or organised trip over long distances, and some border areas need permits.
Summer is short and is much the best for the mountains. Winters in eastern Kazakhstan are long and severely cold, and spring thaw can make mountain roads difficult.
Kazakhstan uses the KZT, calling code +7.
Kazakhstan uses the tenge, and Kazakh is the state language with Russian very widely spoken here. Hospitality is emphatic, and cards are widely accepted in the city.
