The Parque Nacional Barranca del Cupatitzio, a lush ravine of springs and waterfalls beginning at the river's source, runs right into the city and is remarkable for being urban. Uruapan is the world's leading avocado-producing area, and the Paricutín volcano, which erupted out of a cornfield within living memory and buried a village leaving only a church tower above the lava, is a short drive away.
The centre and the park are walkable and taxis cover the city. Reaching Paricutín involves a drive and then a horse ride or long walk across the lava field.
The dry months from late autumn to spring are the most comfortable. The summer rains bring heavy afternoon storms, and the elevation keeps temperatures moderate year-round.
