Tsuen Wan is a district in the southwestern New Territories of Hong Kong rather than a separate city, at the northern end of the harbour. It was one of the first new towns developed outside Kowloon and is dense and largely residential.
The Sam Tung Uk walled village museum preserves a Hakka settlement within the modern town and is a genuine survival. The cable car to the Tian Tan Buddha on Lantau leaves from nearby Tung Chung, and the hiking trails of Tai Mo Shan, Hong Kong's highest peak, start above the district.
Two MTR lines serve the district with quick connections to Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. Minibuses climb toward the hill trails, and the district is walkable within its core.
Autumn is much the most pleasant, dry and mild with clear air, and is the best hiking season. Summers are hot, humid and subject to typhoons.
