Tin Shui Wai is a new town in the northwestern New Territories of Hong Kong rather than a separate city, built on reclaimed fish ponds near the border with mainland China. It is almost entirely high-rise public and private housing.
The Hong Kong Wetland Park on the town's edge is a substantial reserve on the reclaimed marshes, with boardwalks, bird hides and mangrove, and is genuinely good for migratory birds. The walled villages of the Ping Shan heritage trail nearby preserve traditional Punti clan architecture including Hong Kong's oldest pagoda.
The light rail network and the MTR West Rail line connect the town to Yuen Long and onward to Kowloon. The town itself is walkable on elevated walkways between estates.
Autumn and winter are much the most pleasant and are also the best for migratory birds at the wetland. Summers are hot, humid and subject to typhoons.
