Thimphu's small central area holds most shops, restaurants, and administrative buildings within an easily walkable core, set against a valley of forested hillsides. Staying centrally makes sense given the city's modest size and generally light traffic compared to larger capitals.
Thimphu's dzong and temples are best visited in clear morning light, particularly during spring and autumn when mountain views are least likely to be obscured by cloud. The city's markets are lively and worth timing a visit around midday.
Thimphu is compact enough that many sights are within walking distance, while taxis are inexpensive and useful for reaching sites further up the valley. Public buses exist but are less commonly used by visitors than taxis.
Thimphu's high elevation gives it a cool, temperate climate, with spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) generally offering the clearest skies and best mountain visibility. The summer monsoon brings regular rainfall, and winters can be quite cold.
