Thessaloníki is Greece's second city, curving around a bay in the north with the Upper Town climbing the hillside behind. The waterfront promenade runs the length of the centre from the port to the White Tower, and Ano Poli above retains Ottoman houses and Byzantine walls.
The city holds a remarkable group of Byzantine churches recognised as a World Heritage site, several with mosaics and frescoes in place. The White Tower on the seafront is the city's emblem, the Rotunda and the Arch of Galerius date from the Roman period, and the archaeological museum covers the Macedonian kingdom whose royal tombs at Vergina are nearby.
The waterfront and centre are walkable, the Upper Town is a steep but rewarding climb, and a metro line has recently opened. The city is the natural base for Halkidiki and for Mount Olympus.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Summers are hot and humid, though the sea breeze helps on the waterfront, and winters are cool and wet.
