    Where to stay

    Neighborhood guide

Tarsus lies on the Çukurova plain in southern Turkey, inland from the Mediterranean beneath the Taurus mountains. The centre holds a compact old quarter of stone houses, and the city has been continuously settled for several thousand years.

    What to see

    Timed to the light

The city is the birthplace of Saint Paul, and the well associated with him and the surviving Roman road are the principal sites for visitors. The Cleopatra Gate, the ancient street excavated below modern ground level, and the waterfalls on the Berdan river just outside the town are the other draws.
