Tanga is a port on Tanzania's northern Indian Ocean coast, quieter and lower-key than Dar es Salaam. The centre near the harbour retains German and British colonial-era buildings, and the town spreads modestly inland from the water.
The harbour front and the old colonial quarter give the town its character, and both are best walked early before the heat. The limestone Amboni caves outside the town and the coastal reefs are the main regional attractions, and the surrounding country was historically the centre of the sisal trade.
The centre is small and walkable, with bajaji three-wheelers and shared minibuses for longer trips. Buses run down the coast toward Dar es Salaam and inland toward Moshi and Arusha.
The coast is hot and humid year-round, with a long rainy season around the middle of the year and a shorter one late in the year. The drier months between are the most comfortable and the best for the reefs.
