Tampico lies on the Gulf coast of Tamaulipas at the mouth of the Pánuco river, and grew wealthy in the early oil boom. The centre retains cast-iron balconied buildings from that period, in a style closer to New Orleans than to most of Mexico.
The Plaza de la Libertad and the surrounding historic centre with its wrought-iron balconies are the city's architectural distinction. The Huastec culture museum covers the region's pre-Hispanic heritage, and Miramar beach north of the city is a long stretch of Gulf shoreline.
Taxis and buses cover the city and the historic centre is walkable. The beach is a short drive north, and current local advice on road travel in the state is worth seeking.
The drier, cooler months from late autumn to spring are the most comfortable. Summers are hot and humid, and the Gulf coast is exposed to hurricanes in late summer and autumn.
