Takoradi forms the western half of the twin city of Sekondi-Takoradi on Ghana's Atlantic coast, and is the commercial and port half of the pair. The centre is arranged around a distinctive circular market, with residential districts spreading inland and along the coast.
The market circle is the heart of the town and the best place to get its measure, busiest in the morning. The beaches west of the city and the historic forts along this stretch of coast are the regional draw, and the harbour has grown considerably with offshore energy activity.
Shared minibuses known as tro-tros and taxis are the standard transport, and the market area is walkable. The coastal road runs east toward Cape Coast and Accra and west toward the Ivorian border.
The climate is tropical with a main rainy season through the middle of the year and a shorter one later. The drier months around the turn of the year are the most comfortable, though the harmattan can bring haze.
